Dear reader, for most of us, high jewelry hasn't traditionally been associated with refined gentlemen or the gentleman's art of living, especially when compared to other luxury items like timepieces, automobiles, or yachts. However, if the owner is a refined gentleman himself, the perception changes entirely, one notable example is Mr. Ferdinand Schwarzer, the proprietor and fifth generation of the historic Viennese family-owned jeweler, Schwarzer; he now runs the business, oversees operations, and serves as the face of the family brand. Before taking the helm, Ferdinand completed his gem training at GIA in London and Bangkok and specializes in designing and producing custom-made jewelry.

The Schwarzer maison boasts a rich history deeply rooted in Viennese tradition and fine jewelry making. Founded by Ferdinand's ancestors, including Mr. Florian Schwarzer in 1896, the maison has been a testament to Vienna's exquisite craftsmanship and elegance. Over the generations, Schwarzer has maintained its commitment to creating timeless jewelry pieces that reflect the essence of Viennese jewelry making, characterized by timeless sophistication and premium quality, achieved through the careful selection and use of precious gemstones, metals, and discreet craftsmanship.

In terms of style, Ferdinand embodies quintessential Viennese classicism and elegance with his signature classical and polished attire. Even on Instagram, he presents himself impeccably in sophisticated suits and ensembles, showcasing not only his refined sense of fashion but also his rich knowledge of jewelry and gemstones. Today, we are delighted to have Ferdinand join us to discuss his work, his passion for Viennese jewelry making and tradition, as well as his perspective on refined menswear, style, and more. Without further ado, let's dive right in!

My Modern Darcy: Hi Ferdinand, it's a pleasure to have you with us today! First, how did your childhood experiences influence your interest in your family's jewelry business, and what early memories stand out as pivotal in shaping your interest?

Ferdinand Schwarzer: Jewelry has surrounded me for as long as I can remember. One vivid childhood memory is sitting in my grandfather’s office as he handed me gemstones of all colors and taught me to sort them by hue and brilliance. As I grew older, my father would bring me along to client meetings, where I witnessed not only the art of jewelry design, but also the importance of sincere, attentive customer care.

MMD: What sparked your passion for fine jewelry, and how has this passion evolved over time as you've become more involved in the business?

FS: Although I was raised with the idea of continuing our family’s legacy, I wasn’t always certain I wanted to take that path. For a time, I considered a career in finance, that changed completely after an apprenticeship in a Spanish jewelry atelier. I discovered the joy of creating exquisite, timeless pieces — and realized it was far more fulfilling than building financial models in Excel.

MMD: Can you tell us more about your family jewelry maison, Schwarzer? What makes the jewelry house unique, and what is the house's signature work?

FS: We specialize in custom-made jewelry, meaning every piece we create is truly one of a kind. Our designs begin from scratch, inspired entirely by the individual wishes of each client. The customer is deeply involved throughout the process. Another hallmark of our maison is our focus on exceptional gemstones, through long-standing relationships with miners across the globe, we personally source many of our stones, often traveling to mines ourselves to ensure the finest quality.

MMD: Can you walk us through the process of creating a refined piece of jewelry, from conceptualization to completion?

FS: Each piece follows a five-step process, it begins with an in-depth consultation to explore the client’s inspirations. From there, we sketch initial concepts by hand. Next, we craft a 3D model and produce a printed prototype, the client remains closely involved, and we adjust the design as needed. Once the final version is approved, our master goldsmiths bring it to life. We also continue to support our clients well beyond the purchase, offering a lifetime warranty for every piece.

MMD: How do you define a piece of fine jewelry? From selecting one-of-a-kind gemstones and the skills required, to gem-setting, etc.?

FS: A fine piece of jewelry is a harmonious blend of artistic vision, precious materials, such as exceptionally rare gemstones, and expert craftsmanship. Gem-setting in particular is a delicate and critical skill; a single misstep can damage a rare stone, it demands years of experience and a steady, masterful hand.

MMD: How does jewelry-making know-how relate to Viennese tradition and culture? What is the valuable beauty about Viennese jewelry making that sets it apart?

FS: Vienna is a city steeped in history and reverence for tradition, walking through its center, you feel the echoes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city has long been home to renowned jewelers — some of whom once served the imperial court. While our family business isn’t among those original suppliers to the imperial court, we carry forward that legacy of refinement and craftsmanship.

MMD: As a family jewelry business owner, what challenges have you encountered, and how did you overcome them?

FS: Our maison has withstood two World Wars and multiple economic crises. Survival through such times has only been possible by continually innovating, while remaining steadfast in our traditions and values.

MMD: Let's talk about yourself. What makes you passionate about sticking to a classic aesthetic in your style, and how does this reflect your personal values or philosophy?

FS: I believe dressing appropriately is part of showing respect, not only for oneself, but also for one's profession and clients. While I enjoy elegant clothing, my style choices are less about personal vanity and more about honoring the art we create and offering clients a truly refined experience.

MMD: What is your favorite classic menswear ensemble, and how do you believe it complements your role as a refined gentleman in the jewelry industry?

FS: I have a particular affection for double-breasted suits, they embody timeless elegance and sophistication — qualities that align beautifully with the spirit of high jewelry.

MMD: Can you tell us more about how a piece of fine jewelry relates to a gentleman's life and nurturing his art of living?

FS: When we created a piece of fine jewelry, we pursued perfection — from the rarest materials to the finest craftsmanship. Similarly, a gentleman should cultivate excellence both outwardly and inwardly; true elegance begins with appearance but extends far deeper: it’s about how one treats others, upholds values, and carries oneself with dignity.

MMD: How do you define the word 'style' nowadays, and what does it mean to you?

FS: I often think of Oscar Wilde’s observation: “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” Style, by contrast, is timeless. It’s closely tied to values like refinement, grace, and a sense of tradition — qualities I deeply admire.

MMD: Besides being well-dressed and well-groomed, in your opinion, what other qualities should a modern gentleman possess?

FS: A gentleman is defined above all by his conduct, he is respectful, well-mannered, kind, and gentle, at the same time, he must possess self-respect, self-discipline, and honesty, these are the foundations of true character.

MMD: If someone comes to you and asks how to become a successful jewelry business owner, what advice would you give?

FS: I would first advise them to be genuinely passionate about the beauty of jewelry, and then, they must place the client experience at the heart of everything they do. In the world of luxury, the packaging, aftercare, and long-term relationship with the customer are as important as the piece itself.

Special thanks to Mr. Ferdinand Schwarzer.
